Nelson : Life at that time was very hard for black people.

me: Where did you live?

Nelson: I used to live in Soweto , a black ghetto.

me: What's a ghetto?

Nelson: It's a shanty town where black people lived under very poor conditions.

me: did you have the same rights as whites?

Nelson: No. a black could go to school with whites, he couldn't go to the same bar or cinema. A black couldn't marry a white. In fact, we were separated apart

me: What about the working conditions?

Nelson: The worst jobs were reserved for us and we were badly paid.
